Found a use for melodeon thumbstraps!
« on: October 08, 2008, 01:44:13 PM »

Having recently upgraded my melodeon mics to a PZM and ATM350, I've spent this morning trying to find the best way of attaching them to my box. The ATM350 was proving a little troublesome. With the grille removed, the casing of the treble end was too thick to attach it's little rubber clamp too - and even if that had worked I would have had to cut a hole in the grille or find some sort of replacement. My next idea was to cut out the mesh from one of the larger holes in the grille so that I could attach the clamp there - again, no luck. There wasn't enough room between the treble mechanism and the grille, so pressing some buttons resulted in the mic clamp getting hit by the pads - which made noise.

Having repaired my grille mesh I'd given up for a while, and was going through by box of miscellaneous spare parts looking for something unrelated when I happened to notice the thumbstrap that I'd removed from my old Bafetti. I noticed the screw it attached with was the same size as the ones that attach my current melodeon's grille. The picture tells the rest of the story.  :)

The mic bounces around a little, though not really any more than my old ones used to do with their velcro attachments, and it keeps its general position very nicely. I'll be using this method at my next gig unless I think of anything better first.

I've found a use for it, too. During playing I insert my thumb into it to hold the instrument steady. But I readily admit that I position the thumbstrap in a different place on the box than is shown in your picture.
