I have declared my house an Olympic-Free Zone and I would hate to have to stop using Melnet until this infestation is over.  :o  :o

A Nork Wardsod.

PS: By the way, What has Pete Coe done to annoy you mory, and when did he get (not too late in my opinion) ennobled?  >:E  :||:

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Even the M&Ms advert recognises the quintessential Englishness of morris :( And it's not really less Olympian than beach volleyball or synchronised swimming.
However, maintaining icy dignity probably indeed best course.
I look forward to seeing how they deal with the inevitable consequences of sheep, though.

Took young Fred motorbiking to the Alps a few years ago with melodeon, (see blog) and we ended up in Interlaken for the Swiss National Day. The procession was led by a massive, bearded William Tell, holding the flag out with one arm outstretched .. then the cows, each with a suitcase sized bell around its neck

Yes the this really is on thread .. as the third in this cortège was .. the Interlaken Road Cleaning Service (with own flag and switched on machines)  ;) And it all ran on time!

Again I'd like to ask did any sides go out and dance in support of the Olympic torches journey.  It would have been an ideal opportunity, just imagine a team or two at every stage of the flames journey, especially with the world's press looking on. I think the Olympic organising committee would have had no choice but to include morris in the opening or closing ceremony if that had happened. It's probably not entirely to late either, at least to get in some PR as the torch journey is not finished yet, any sides game? the hand over sites would be ideal. It is a go get it world with plenty willing to self promote so I guess its all about having drive which equates to self belief, I guess it takes leadership and organisation to rally everyone together that's why internal divisions and separatism in organisations holds them back. I've sat on a few committee's in differing roles and at the end of the day its always about what people do not what they say that makes a difference. Oh well, good luck to any sides that do make it into the public eye at the torch procession carnival. All the Best mory

Maybe the squire could have put down his staff and picked up the torch  (:)

We considered it and decided not to as :
 a) its a weekday and most of us have to work for a living
 b) whatever crowds there are will be there to see the torch, not morris dancers
 c) our council decided to have outrunners on pushbikes to accompany the torch, plus further out runners to protect the cyclists, so there won't be a lot of room for morris dancers
 d) by the time we had managed to form a set, decided what dance to do, and played the A part intro, the torch would have been and gone......

 ;D

BTW - what happens to the torch overnight? Is it guarded by specially selected torch virgins, who fan the flames with their pure breath to keep them going all night? Or does it get extinguished to meet Health and Safety requirements, and get re-lit the next day by the keeper of the sacred Ronson, wearing the traditional costume of a blue boiler suit with a roll-up decorously hanging from his top lip?

I understand Newcastle Kingsmen will be dancing when the torch reaches Newcastle quayside this evening. The weather might affect things - it has been pouring with rain here for several hours.

Gog Magog Molly will in Cambridge, Peterborough Morris will/have in Spalding, The Ironmen and Severn Gilders did in Ludlow, Rutland Morris Men will/have in Uppingham etc etc. Loads of sides have or will.

Pikey, the idea was to entertain the crowds before and after the torch had gone through. Lots of people stood around waiting for something to happen - a captive audience!

Pikey, Oliie, are you two holding a torch for each other?  ;)

It's good that some sides have/will be getting out there and it's definatly not all over until it is. It has only just begun really, good luck. AtB mory

Maybe it should be a ladies side then Theo I hear they are a bit 'ard up in Newcastle, mind you it's only a bit of rain put the melodeons away and get the Tabors out.   :|||:

Not at all - in hindsight, my last reply sounded a bit sharp. It wasn't meant to - little on edge today as it's my last exam!

I've never known rain put the Kingsmen off!

@Olly - we did consider dancing before and after, but reckoned that afterwards the crowds would be too busy going home, and before there would be too many folks milling around for us to find a decent spot to dance in that would attract enough folks. It's a long and circuitous route into York, with no obvious spots to catch a crowd, most of whom won't want to give up the spot they've managed to blag next to the route to be entertained by The Slightly Notorious.

All the best to those who have danced, and will dance for the torch.  Get the ronsons ready in case the rain puts it out....  ;D
