Poll: Tune of the Month for July 2012
« on: June 24, 2012, 11:28:47 PM »

Hi folks; looks like it's time to run the poll again! Here's this month's choices:

From last month, La Choca - A *gorgeous* french waltz/mazurka thing, that I believe comes from the playing of La Chavannee, and is, as far as I know traditional. Or does anyone know better? While it's not the easiest tune in the world, nor is it that hard - with a bit of practice, it's perfectly playable on a standard 2 row 8 bass instrument. Here it is played by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting, in 1996(!) - La Choca is the second tune, and starts at about 2:40 mins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COQA-uc6yS8 (a quick caveat here from those trying to learn it off ABC, if it's different to what Andy's playing, don't worry too much about it - there is no definitive source for this tune, and so no right or wrong version.)

The Redowa Polka, From the playing of our own Gavin Atkin, here's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbp-8EE9HRY ; (that's a great video Gavin - ideal for those looking to pick up the tune ). Oh, and I see Gavin's done a followup tutorial video too - even better! Here's the second video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Uj8onoBvso

Lemonville Jig - played here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4C4wuQjPbY by Ed Rennie, who says "A fabulous tune from the New World, made popular over here by Northumbrian fiddle player Willy Taylor and features on the album Mouthorgan by Will Atkinson (who was Willy Taylor's cousin as it happens). It was composed by John C (Jack) Hayes, who gets my and everyone else's vote of thanks."

Foul Weather Call - a rather appropriate tune at the moment (in the UK at least!) - and again, it's played here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1FulrcFrns by Ed Rennie, who says of this one "Originally from the manuscripts of the Welch family of Bosham, Sussex, this deliciously quirky tune is another Dan Quinn affair which I lifted bodily from the Flowers and Frolics LP Sold Out. If you haven't got a copy of that, go looking for one, it's a gem."

Happy voting folks!

Cheers,

Clive

If the Redowa wins the vote, I'm going to try to get some traction on the correct key and chords for the C music.

Not entirely possible on a D/G melodeon. It goes into C and ideally needs an F chord

"C"G2 Bc BcBc|"F"A2^cd cdcd|"G"B2 G2 A2 B2|"C"c2 d2 a2 g2|

This will require a total brain rewire for most melodeon players who've played it before, but it makes far more sense than that weird Gmaj/Amaj stuff.

You can fake it with a D bass instead on an F chord.

Thanks you, Anahata, for explaining what it is about the Redowa that I don't like. They used to play it a lot in Sussex when I lived there, and I never got on with it, but hadn't taken the trouble to work out why.
Even if I had the right chords I still wouldn't like it - that C music has a miserable, uneasy sound about it, which you don't want in a polka.
Lemonville gets my vote, cracking tune.

Foul Weather Call.  I do like a shanty, and it is quite appropriate to the current weather, as has been said!

I don't have accidentals, so anything that strays into C just annoys me.  I am already annoyed by being unable to play Bluebell Polka.

I don't have accidentals, so anything that strays into C just annoys me.

In this case, there is no F natural in the tune, so that's not a problem.

I don't mind if any of the others wins. Lemonville Jig and Foul Weather Call are great tunes, and La Choca would be a new one to learn, and one I've voted for in the last two polls just for the challenge.

Does anyone have any information on Jack Hayes who wrote the Lemonville? Is he still alive?

The music in the Scottish Fiddlers Session Book vols1&2 says "Composer Jack C. Hayes, © John J. Hayes", so I guess he's no longer with us.

There seems to be a repeat bar thingy missing at the beginning of line 5 of the Lemonville Jig ABC.
