OK, hands up who's heard this before?
« on: June 27, 2012, 12:40:32 AM »

I came across this today, idly browsing Bandcamp for melodeon CDs as you do.

I can honestly say I haven't heard a melodeon played like this before.

If John Cage had discovered the melodeon...

My dog found it subliminally disturbing.

Judging by the pages art work it is played on a Chinese Pokerwork, would have been infinitely better on an older German or, even better still, Swiss made one  ;)

It's sounds like he accidentally switched on the recorder whilst he was setting up!

Dog gone it, that's what I heard just before I woke up in a cold sweat. Then, it came to me. Some body phoned home from my garden shed.

Buy Pignol's "Fictions" CD - there's a lot of this sort of thing on there. It's very current and avant garde - technically "free improvisation" - as opposed to something built on a tune or chord sequence.   If you go to stage impro in SE France they make you do free impro as an exercise, but obviously not with the sampled sound. So yes, I've experienced this and he's not at all bad. I've not personally come across Richard Sanderson but I've initiated an enquiry amongst the London improvising community and will report back .. Sorry, I know I'm a reactionary traditionalist - but what a winker!  Random creaks and groans just bore me to f'ing tears.

It's so sad that the internet is full of bigotry, ill considered knee jerk reactions and misdirected vitriol. Why can't we live in a happy land where everyone thinks the same as me.  :'(

No bigotry, well considered (I listened to it) and no vitriol - just stating my opinion.  It lacked everything that a melodeon does well - music!

I'm a bit confused?
I liked it.
It sounds like one of my tunes, but didn't end end with "that's enough now John-put it back in the case and get the beers in!". >:E

According to the Bandcamp link the CDs (n=50) are sold out.  So he has sold at least 50.

Okay, hands up to me means a criminal has been apprehended..This is a criminal alright.  Like John Cage who fooled the people on most occassions because they said he was different, but truly wasn't.
People of some breed or other are always running interference with the reality of logic. Doesn't mean
that they are Goofers but it does mean they haven't learned to be honest with themselves. Chris Ryall is on top of this when he mentions Nobert Pignol. Pignol is an Artist. He know's the meanings and is free to improvise. It can be exciting to hear his one person's expressions. He is honest in a
not so honest world. ICEBreaker Music is a term for experiment but the hinge is that years of sacrifice go with the final achievement.  There are still rules to follow as you explore and this introduction to breaking the ice is a absolute Lie from the said player. This music is criminal for
anyone and for sure anyone who is looking to reach beyond the reality of his or her music as
professed by the main stream. I encouraged everyone to experiment but you must know the rules before the journey. Almost every player on this forum has the experience to step out and discover.
Not so with whatever this guy's name is.  Maybe he has 50 family members or than again the public
is just waiting for another chance to be foolish.
experiment come's after the rules. All the best in the modern world which began 150 years ago.

Okay, the genius of playing is for each their opinion and style. There is nothing wrong with feeling good about ones'self as you may just be "crackers" and celebrated by many.

A long time ago I made up my mind very firmly about what kind of music I like.  Now I classify music as either (a) the music I like, or (b) the music I've not yet learned to like.  There is quit a wide range in each category.
I commend this classification to all.:)

Duke Ellington said there's two types of music: good and bad. I wouldn't call what the Bandcamp bloke does "music," same for much of John Cage's work. I'm a big supporter of the musically strange and unusual, but that was pretty boring. I can't say it's terribly original, either. It reminds me heavily of what Peter Browne was doing a few years ago.

Whatever you may think about John Cage's music, you can't ignore that fact that many respectable 20th century composers were hugely influenced by Cage's ideas about sound, music and how we listen.

However, I can't say I was able to listen to Sanderson's melodeon improvisation for very long, whether that's saying something about me or him.

An interesting test, though, is to try that sort of thing yourself and see if you could do any better. Whatever "better" means, of course - difficult to judge when the usual criteria don't work.
