Anna McGarrigle plays ... what?
« on: October 16, 2008, 10:39:53 PM »

Hi all,

I dearly love the music of the McGarrigle Sisters.  Last night, I found a few clips on YouTube, including a lovley live version of "Complainte Pour St Catherine", on which Anna plays Button Accordion (oh, all right, melodeon, if you insist).  It looks like a Pokerwork, but does anyone know what tuning she plays?

The URL for this clip appears to be http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LRkngBZOBRs&feature=related .

The song seems to be in some sort of E dorian mode with lots of A chords in it. Most quint boxes in Québec are in A/D, and as she seems to be playing mainly on the inner row, this would make sense. Thanks for the time travel - I know the fiddler well, this must be from 25-30 years back.

Edited to bring message back to life.

One tag says 1981 for the date.  I was young then too.  Who is the fiddler, Steve?

I asked this ages ago and no-one seemed to know.  I wonder whether, a couple of years on, anyone out there can answer now?

Many thanks.

I have seen her playing a Pokerwork but am still searching for a clip.

OK, found it. Here's Complainte Pour St. Catherine played on a D/G Pokerwork.

Minor point but on all the "Complainte"s I have seen on Youtube Kate is playing the box.
