b/c player advice needed-Planxty Johnston
« on: June 26, 2012, 02:04:50 AM »

I am trying to learn Planxty Johnston on b/c. The Chief transcribes it in A. This takes the tune into the b/c stratosphere and requires a high D. A no go on a traditional b/c

Does anyone have (or have heard on a recording) a work around?

advice much appreciated

I'm not sure I understand the problem here. Most versions of Planxty Johnston found through ABC Tune finder are in the key of D.

In most instances these are attributed to O'Neils. It would seem therefore that most people would play the melody in D.

Transposed into the key of A, assuming the lowest note (A,) as the draw note on the lowest button on the inside row, the melody fits the compass of the instrument without problem.

My screw up. Have been travelling and wrote that from the airport.

I an trying to learn the tune in O'Neill's key of D. sorry.

In the second part, third bar, the phrase does a |d'2b c'2a|.

On the two row B/C traditional reed arrangement there is no d'. Thus the request for advice if any B/C players had a work around.

On my John Williams Connemara III I have the d' on the draw on the B row bottom. But since I have a traditional 2 row, and occassioanly play freinds traditional 2 row boxes, I learn tunes on the Conn III- which despite its weight is an amazing instrument- as well as my Gustozzi tradtional 2 row.

So this request focus on the two row B/C playing in D. Our Freinds at Thesession.org have it in G which is very playable, but its down a full fifth and loses something in the translation.

Thanks
