Yes, it's time for the obvious follow up to last month's write a tune theme, this month let's each pick and play a tune written by a melnet user (not yourself please, that's cheating!)

There's the group of tunes we wrote last month, which you can read here:  http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,9588.0.html

... and there's the group of tunes we wrote when we ran "the write a tune" theme two years ago here: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,4154.0.html

Between those two, that should be quite a selection of stuff to choose from, but also feel free to plunder any original tunes posted in the Tunes or Recordings and Videos boards too (but to keep within the spirit of the theme, only if they're actually posted there for the first time by the person who wrote it ... so sorry, no Flatworld videos... not this month, anyway!)

I'd encourage you to try to learn the tunes by ear if possible, but if you send a quick message to whoever wrote a particular tune, they *may* have ABC laying about somewhere)

Good luck, and let's see if we can get some of these great tunes out there!

Clive

That's part of the genius - we'll all have to listen carefully to each other's tunes now...

One or two of the earlier tunes seem to be lost to posterity due to one thing and another :(
I hope their creators have them safe.

I've got a recording of that somewhere that I'll put up on Soundcloud. I'll also do any abc for all the tunes I've posted on Mel.net.

Edit - I've created this little blog - http://olliekingtunediary.blogspot.co.uk/ - over the next few days, I'll be adding lots of the tunes that I've written. :)

Matt - your list credits 'Ten mile Norah' to Ukebert, when in fact it is my composition!

VALENTINE WALTZ

Thanks for including my tune in the list - but I deleted the instrumental version from YouTube when I re-recorded it with words written to the melody.
The song is on Mixcloud. It was written to try out a left-hand chord progression which I had going around in my head at the time, and the melody just followed it.

Sorry!  Now corrected.

Thanks Matt. It looks like at least one person will be learning this tune - ME! But I will look at the others with a view to learning one.

I've got two volumes of Tunes written by Strad, which surely fit the brief. Obviously we would need his permission before posting or recording anything. Some lovely, lovely tunes.

Lovely as they may be, I'd rather not unless they've already been posted to melnet somewhere by strad.

The main problem being we have some illustrious players passing through these halls, Andy Cutting, Martin Ellison, Squeezy of course, etc, etc, who between them are probably responsible for a hefty chunk of recently composed UK melodeon music and have a rather impressive back catalogue. You see, some of the ideas behind this are to help bring unheard of music to people's attention, encourage people to have a go at writing new stuff, and interpreting music they've never heard before. I could put together a version of Mr Cutting's Flatworld, for example, very easily, but that doesn't really do any of those things.

Hence the
Quote
Between those two, that should be quite a selection of stuff to choose from, but also feel free to plunder any original tunes posted in the Tunes or Recordings and Videos boards too (but to keep within the spirit of the theme, only if they're actually posted there for the first time by the person who wrote it ... so sorry, no Flatworld videos... not this month, anyway!)
bit  (:)

Having said that, I seem to remember a Martin Ellison recording or two that was posted to the Recordings section a while back; since they're 'first performance' videos posted by Martin himself, I'd say they're fair game [[[ Edit: Argh, no, I was thinking of Ghosts which Martin said is an Albert Ayler tune, and almost all his recordings have been lost with the fiery death of onmvoice anyway. Any chance of reuploading them on soundcloud Martin? ]]]. Hmmm! It's all very complicated isn't it? :o

VALENTINE WALTZ

As you have been so kind to include my tune in the listing,  I have re-recorded the video to make it easier to see what I'm up to with the left hand.

I also wrote and uploaded as part of the "Morris Tunes" ThOTM (though strictly it's Molly) The Road To Ripon

And in response to a posting by LadydeTemps in the "Writing Tunes" thread I recycled the above tune into The Essex Girl which now follows The First of June in a track on our new album. Dots HERE.

I already recorded LDT's "Grey Day" but I play it slower now, and it sounds good on my C/F box so I might have another go for this thread, though additionally I may not be the only one here who wants to have a go  at Ollie's Polperro Bay.

Calling Ollie!

have you got any dots or abc for that beauty wrote Polperro Bay.
That is truly a touch of genius and I'd love to learn it but am somewhat challenged on the 'learning by ear' front.

Thanks

I have indeed! I've attached it as a pdf.

I am a little unsure of the time signatures in the first half of the B section - if it's wrong, please do let me know, and I'll correct it.

Here's a link to the sound file again - http://soundcloud.com/olliekingbox/polperro-bay

POLPERRO BAY by Ollie King

 http://youtu.be/0nmDzhiued8

(Rushing to be the first to record this most beautiful tune.

thanks Ollie.  Keep 'em coming, and the printed music was really helpful for speed of learning.

I love the irregular phrase length the atmosphere  and the tune contours.
It has a kind of echo for me of the folksong Linden Lea, which we sang at school.

So could it be used to dance a Scottische?  With repeats,  the B music is short of 4 beats overall compared with the standard 8 bar tune structure.  So you would have to add one extra filler bar (of G)  just before going back to the A music. That would bring the total number of bars right to fit the dance. But the dancers would have to ignore the music, as the steps would cut across music phrasing until starting normally with the A music.  (Alternatively that 3/2 bar would have to be made into two bars of 4/4, but that would spoil Ollie's idea)
--
If you noticed that my Loffet is sounding warmer and more alive... it's just been on its holidays to uncle Theo in Gatehead. Thanks  Theo.
