POLPERRO BAY by Ollie King

 http://youtu.be/0nmDzhiued8

(Rushing to be the first to record this most beautiful tune.

thanks Ollie.  Keep 'em coming, and the printed music was really helpful for speed of learning.

I love the irregular phrase length the atmosphere  and the tune contours.
It has a kind of echo for me of the folksong Linden Lea, which we sang at school.

Fantastic stuff, Jack! I really really enjoyed listening to that, and it was wonderful to hear your interpretation of it. There are some chord sequences in there that I might be, er... 'collecting'. :P

Thanks again.  (:)

Thanks Ollie, I'm relieved and delighted to have composer approval, especially for the chord sequences.  I'd also experimented with not having G chord for bar 5, as maybe seemed too soon a return to the Tonic, but didn't want to stray too far from the original.  (G/D speak here).

Ollie, if you can do this as a teenager... what will you be doing at 30 ?!?! ???

(My agenda for this theme is:  End of an Era;  The Ruby; and then Orangeville to take me out of my comfort zone.)

"THE RUBY"  by Theo Gibb

http://youtu.be/m-s77Uto6ro

A lovely romantic tune Theo wrote for his 40th wedding Anniversay . (I won't tell my wife, or she will be jealous.)
Please listen to Theo's original for the authentic tune and feeling, as the folk process has got to my version.
Here it is: http://soundcloud.com/theboxplace/theruby

I've now trimmed off the improvisation which went wrong and departed from the tune.

"THE RUBY"  by Theo Gibb

http://youtu.be/m-s77Uto6ro

A lovely romantic tune Theo wrote for his 40th wedding Anniversay . Lucky Ruby.  (I won't tell my wife, or she will be jealous.)
I enjoyed making this version, which differs a bit from Theo's.  You wouldn't believe how many takes it took: most of the day!
My improvisation went a bit wrong at the end, but it will have to stay in as I'm all Rubied out.   Thanks Theo.

Well done Jack - I've been playing with this tune myself for the past couple of days (along with a couple of others) and not making much progress! Ah well :-) You've done a nice job I think!

Thanks for learning my tune Jack and Clive.

I like the variations Jack, but there is one note that I would like to insist on, it may be my fault for not doing a very clear recording for you to learn from. In the final phrase of the B part it should resolve to the high G in place of the hight F# in all the other phrases.

Sorry about that Theo.  I've trimmed off most of my "variations"  so what remains is closer to the authentic tune,  except for when I fumble, though not necessarily in the original  octave. (Allow for youtube  delays).   I've also finally realised that "Ruby" refers to the anniversary and is not your wife's name (Derrr!).

A couple of tunes,

Cooper's Bourree le Menage: which I came upon linking from a non Cooper 'on site' posting to an 'off site' resource which described it as a Melnet user's tune! Then worked backwards into site to confirm eligible! Serendepity. In hindsight I would add a B bass note to make the final chord ambiguous and closer to that intended. I did revise some of Cooper's  chords in the B section to suit my ear. Hopefully forgivable.

Anahata's Orangeville Reel: a great one row challenge which can run ahead of the engine if allowed free rein. Hopefully just enough coal on this one. A bit close to the microphone I fear so rather overdriven sound wise but you will get the idea.

Best regards

Bill

PS I have also put Ollie's Polperro Bay up but off thread as not on melodeon, http://youtu.be/nMF6cKKH1Ng

Great to hear Wouter's tune played so well, and that great ENERGY for the orangeville!  Isn't melnet marvelous?

Cooper (Wouter) sent this to frenchtuneswiki.wetpaint.com a while ago. I wonder if that's where you saw it, Bill.

For the notation,  go to http://frenchtuneswiki.wetpaint.com, click on link  for 3-time bourrees. Then click on the title (le menage) to get standard sheet music,  or use the abc that's already there on the page.

Cooper kindly explained the pun:  "menage...... a trois  ::)

Cooper also has a 2-time bourree on frenchtuneswiki: "Lente"  =  Spring.

Thanks for tackling my tune Jack. You've obviously been very busy this month, with several interpretive tunes already posted - very impressive!  (:)

The core of the tune suggested itself to me the very first time I picked up the old Hohner - the day I received it back from Forrest Crain who had kindly restored it for me. I notice you play it significantly faster than me, & that actually seems to make sense to me when I hear it. For some reason, I always felt the obligation to slow it down.

The tune (& my Youtube "persona") is named for Lake Simcoe - about an hours drive north of Toronto. I was lucky enough to spend 12 years living on the shore of this beautiful lake. With an area of approx. 722 sq km, Lake Simcoe could be considered a big, small lake ... or a small, big lake (by Canadian standards!).

Thanks AirTime, glad you like it. A slower tempo would suit the broad expanses of a peaceful lake, so I sure lost that feature.

Anahata's Orangeville Reel: a great one row challenge which can run ahead of the engine if allowed free rein.

Thank you! You could do it a little slower and it would be less of a challenge  (:)

An attempt at Ollie King's wonderful Polperro Bay - http://youtu.be/ajO_1ociGvA

I had to make a bit of a change to a bar in the B part as I don't have a low C - apologies, Ollie.

(Would like to be able to say that if you can hear a swishing in the background it is the waves of the Hauraki Gulf, but I think it is more likely to be rain on the tin roof)

I have finally had a chance to hear this. Thank you for playing my tune - about time, as it was written to your specification. And nicely played too!

As for the basses - well, my original version was played on a 1 row...

So pleased you like it. :) Its reasurring to get composers 'thumbs up'.

Now is that a challenge for me to try it on the one row? ;)

Many thanks to Bill, Jack and Spikey for uploading versions of my tunes. It really is so wonderful to know that people not only like my tunes, but actually have gone away and learnt them.  (:)

Hi all, some great versions so far this month; it's fun to hear these tunes taking on new wings!

Here's the first of a couple of thoughts this month; I've actually been trying out a few different tunes, and probably more will surface before the end of the month, but here's the first to come out of the sausage factory so to speak:

Jackdiatonique's Stefan's Waltz: http://youtu.be/rHBRjm7jB8g

That's a lovely tune Jack, and it just about qualifies, because you mentioned it a really long time ago somewhere in the recordings section I think! (Hoisted by the petard of my own rules!  :o ) Listening back to your version, I'm not sure I'm actually very close to it at all now! Oops! Never mind, I think it's a great tune and deserves playing. It's certainly an earworm, that's for sure. It just sticks in your head, and it does not let go.

Played reasonably straight (for once) on the Castagnari Mory in D/G, which puts this in E minor, rather than Jack's D minor original (which is here, by the way)

Cheers,

Clive
