I like the idea of a melodeon condom - it sounds an entirely sensible idea, especially a double wrapped one with one on the outside too.
I currently haven't got a gig bag. I was thinking of looking around at Sidmouth and see what's available, but might need something for Warwick. Currently it's a choice of either carrying my melodeon in it's box or to save pulling arms out of sockets, pop it into a ruck sack. It's a tight fit into a ruck sack I've got. I need to try it wtih the condom and make sure it fits. I realise I'll have no protection against knocks in a ruckie, but as Howard has mentioned, it does have a pull out cover to enclose the whole ruckie.

I have no intention of playing for the morris whilst my knees still work. If it's raining it's a 'given' in our side that if you can't get the box player safely tucked under a big umbrella or in a large doorway to keep absolutely dry, then we won't dance. Thankfully everyone realises that melodeons cost a lot of money.
This is just to get my Tommy to and from any sessions I'd like to go to at a couple of festivals where, for once I'm not dancing and aim to go and enjoy myself with
:|||: ...... and of course the odd  :|glug

thanks for the thoughts.
Off for a cup of tea then into the cellar to unite my ruckie, Tommy and a condom  :D
Q

Maybe there's a market for customised melodeon condoms? You could have the name of your box on it!
Our 'tina players box must be called 'Debenhams'......

Well, I've a big rucksack liner, and I'm taking my melodeon to Edinburgh for the Fringe, which will involve various train and tube journeys.  If the weather is anything like it was yesterday, this liner should get a good testing.

I'll pop into town and take a look at proper liners.
I have managed to find some thin but dense foam that will just fit into the ruckie and protect the box - but it is tight.
Not sure about taking a melodeon into the rufty tufty outdoors shop and pulling out my tommy and asking if they've got anything to fit it  :D
Mind you, life's all aboout experiences  ;)

I have a couple, only small ones mind (i don't know hpw big they go) - but they are generally pretty cheap and obviously weather proof

80 litre liner.  100 x 40 x 25 cm.  According to something I just looked up, my Morgane is about 30 x 17 cm and she's not a dainty box, so should fit.  As I said, I have a 50 litre liner (70 x 35 x 25 cm) so I was going to give it a try with the melodeon when I go a-travelling.  Should fit the Instrument of Torture snugly.

Out dancing next to the canal in Berko tonight, just hope we can tell the difference between the towpath and the cut.

You could try a bikebin  (use google) which is a waterproof hardshell pannier. It's a bit of a funny shape but big enough for a two row. It's quite light and comes with a handle and carrying strap. The cost is about £30.

I really like the notion of morris themed synchronized swimming - but maybe for women's sides only.  The image of eight beer bellies in Speedos isn't condusive to a good night's sleep!

I was at the same weekend. I had one box in a hard case, and one in a Music Room gig bag. Both stayed perfectly dry, and the gig back did get quite wet.

keeping ones box dry  when transporting it is not that difficult as demonstrated by the veriety of solutions posted.  Its keeping it dry while playing  in damp/wet conditions ( best not done atall) that is the greater problem.  As I have previously mentioned my solution was a grotty box played  underneath a cycling cape  - sometimes wondered what the public thought I was playing with!

Lester: For some uncanny reason, we danced last night without getting soaked.
Obviously the sun shines on the blessed  :D

Ollie: I forgot to ask this fundamental question at the end of the weekend, but as it hit in Windsor I do remember wondering how your boxes were keeping. That's the trouble with our lot, it keeps me occupied and is best described as 'attempting to herd cats....'
......but great fun!

I use a plastic dustbin liner.  [Assuming a right-handed player]: Open up the sealed end to make a tube and slide the liner over the box from the bass end; then wrap the RH end around the fingerboard and hold in place with your thumb/palm.  Play the melody buttons through the liner - by feel (you DO know where they are without having to see them, don't you? ;))  and the bass end by inserting your hand inside the liner.

the late, great Reg Varney, who was the star of On the Buses, was also a pretty good piano player in the pub style. He learned to play in the dark during blackouts in the war, hence had no trouble at all playing when he couldn't see the keys!

slight thread drift here but...... I've no idea what my fingers are doing simply because I've never looked!
I might glance down at the start to make sure i'm on the 4th button but then that's it.
