Looking for Captain Webb (from ... 0
« on: November 19, 2007, 11:05:26 AM »

Rich Arrowsmith played a catchy little tune in a session last night.  He called it "Captain Webb From..." I presume from the first man to swim the channel.  I've had a look using JC's ABC tune finder but no luck.  Any idea where I can get hold of the dots?

Possibly related to John Kirkpatrick's song, Captain Webb from Shropshire - a cheery little ditty, and indeed about the first man to swim the English Channel, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Webb. I think it's on one of John's early albums with Sue Harris, perhaps Among the many attractions, or Rose of Britains Isle - don't have either to hand so can't confirm or deny, I'm afraid.

Or it could be something completely different!

That would be captain Webb from Dawley.  I think the tune was composed by John Kirkpatrick as a setting for the poem by John Betjeman

Thanks all for the info, and Lester for the ABC.  I'd forgotten the link to Betjamin's poem, it was mentioned last night although I don't think JK's was named as the composer.

Small amount of pedantry - the song and poem are both called A Shropshire Lad

I have it on a John Kirkpatrick-Sue Harris LP (remember them) called Amongst the Many Attractions at the Show will be a Really High Class Band which must rate as one of the longest album names in history. I could go and find who wrote the tune but all the records are in the loft and it's cold.

Your pedantry is always welcome, Lester ;D

The tune looks a bit tricky on a two row, methinks i could do with a reversed D for the B part >:(

I'm pretty sure that the tune was written by Jim Parker who provided all the music for "Betjeman's Banana Blush" and another LP a little later.

The poem is called a " Shropshire Lad "

  This is Betjeman reciting it.
