Poll: Tune of the Month for August 2012
« on: July 25, 2012, 12:01:23 AM »

Hi Folks - it's poll time again; here's this months choices... all "unfortunate" losers in past polls, and deserving of another chance:

The Redowa Polka, From the playing of our own Gavin Atkin, here's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbp-8EE9HRY ; (that's a great video Gavin - ideal for those looking to pick up the tune ). Oh, and I see Gavin's done a followup tutorial video too - even better! Here's the second video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Uj8onoBvso

Enrico - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeL-qKVx0aQ - an English hornpipe that fits a one-row beautifully. Played in the video by Ed Rennie

Valse de Vent - a beautiful, simple (I think, haven't tried to learn it yet!) French waltz written by Florence Pinvidic. And here is a lovely video of her playing it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcGX7x1vJ6I

Soldier's Joy - In honour of DTN's fine demonstration of how to spice this old session standard up, here it is as you'd hear it in most sessions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Sme1bst8oI ... and this is how DTN plays it: [[[ Oops, this recording has been lost with the demise of Onmvoice. DTN, have you got another copy uploaded somewhere? ]]] . A tune you can do a *lot* with.

Off you go folks, happy voting!

Has to be Redowa polka for me. Just love the barmy way the C music wanders off into a different key, without even bothering to establish the new tonality properly!

This tune would be great with Helikon basses.   :||:

You're absolutely right of course, a minute at the piano trying out your chords has convinced me. Not sure that I'm not a bit disappointed though - it's less of a charmingly barmy tune than I thought!

Though the tune still sounds a bit unfinished if I play it without any harmonies at all - due to the lack of F-naturals and the presence of C-sharps (in the C music) I suppose, not really giving the ear the right clues for C-major.

And what do you do about the F chord on a D/G melodeon? Fake it somehow in the right hand? Play it on a C/G melodeon instead? I'd like to second McGrooger's request - I'd love to hear your version!

Cheers Derek - but the link's not working for me I'm afraid!  :'(

OK here in leafy Bucks

OK here in rainy Derbyshire too!

Lovely version of the tune, really interesting variations and beautifully played. May I ask what sort of box you are playing - I'm thinking it must have quite a lot of bass buttons to do all those moving bass lines?
