changing button height with waxed-on pallets
« on: March 27, 2020, 08:42:39 PM »

I'm familiar with the process of lowering or raising button height with boxes that have the pallet arms glued or screwed onto the pallets themselves. In the case of instruments where it is wax that holds the arms to the pallets, what is the best way to go about changing button height?  My thinking is that the wax would be the weak point, meaning that rather than the arm itself bending somewhere along the length of it, the arm would want to break free off the wax, even with pressure applied at the point where the arm makes contact with the pallet, no?

Bend the arm then reset the pallet flat against the fondo I.e. just pull off the pallet once you have the button height you want. Waxed on pallets are easy to unfix/refix with wax.

I found that running a heat gun over the pallets enough to soften not melt the wax will let the pallets reset after changing the button height.

Oh, that sounds ideal - thank you.

That's an excellent plan, thank you.
I've never been able to flow the wax tidily over the pallet, it always end up rather unsightly.

On the box I have, the wax is perfectly flat and flush with the top of the pallet which makes me think they filled the channel and then removed any excess with a straight edge. I already know what it would look like if I try that, so I won’t...
