Stolen Instruments - should we have a separate board?
« on: December 22, 2011, 02:16:03 PM »

As a result of being involved recently in recovering a stolen instrument I'm considering taking the stolen instrument discussion out of the Buy & Sell board, and creating a new board exclusively for tracking stolen instruments.  As i see it the pros and cons stack up like this:

Advantages:
  • easier to find specific cases
  • subsequent developments kept in the same thread
  • As more thefts are reporte these two advantages will be come greater
  • Recovered instruments can be marks as 'closed' or something similar

Disadvantages:
  • increases the length of the board listing by one

And one other choice that I would value views on:   should any 'Stolen' board go into 'Discusions' or 'Forum and website admin' or into its own section?

I think there is a major disadvantage - opportunity to view.
i.e. if it is included in another common board, people merely browsing might take a quick look, perhaps out of curiosity, nd then continue browsing the other posts.
If it has a separate forum board, people may not be so inclinded to take a look.
....but I do see your advantages as being positive.
I suppose the bottom line is - anything we can do to help those suffering losses must be a good move.
Cheers

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Good point, I had not thought of visibility.  So if 'Stolen Instruments' was another board/heading in the main "Discussions"  section that would make it more prominent than it is now.

Over a period of two years there have been about a dozen thefts reported through the topic in the Buy&Sell section. I have no idea how many active players there are who might have reported a loss so can't decide if that is a high or low number of reports.

Perhaps it's worth trying a separate discussion (between Buy&Sell and General Topics) and see how much use it gets. It would also be a place to concentrate anti-theft tips. I don't think that would make the list of "top level" discussion topics too long.

Another way forward would be to list stolen items as separate threads in with the buy and sell discussions, and keep the pinned Stolen topic thread as an index with links to the various stolen items.

The instrument database project unfortunately failed due to outside forces.  Can its position be used / re allocated.  That way there would be no extra headers.

I think the key to making this useful is to make it simple. Putting a "Stolen Instruments" heading as a top-level discussion (I think I've got the nomenclature wrong but I'm sure you see what I mean) makes the subject very visible and easy to use. If it takes a couple of extra clicks to look at the list of stolen instruments (ie through a pinned index list) I think most people wouldn't bother to do it.

So, easy to use, easy to administer, appropriate level of visibility. Sounds simple!

I'm just off to check the photographs of the instruments I own, indelibly write my postcode on the reed blocks and check the small print of my house insurance.

Many of us become very attached to our instruments (I would need removing surgically from mine  :D) and we can empathise strongly with anyone who has had one stolen because we would hate to be in that position ourselves. Obviously, we would want to do everything we can to locate stolen instruments, return them to their owners and bring the culprits to justice. Therefore, I think the stolen instruments section should be as visible and easy to access as possible, so that more of us check it more frequently. If that increases the length of the board listing, then that is a minor inconvenience.

Well done, Theo, for recovering the Oakwood and restoring it to its rightful owner. A heart-warming story for Christmas!

I can only speak for myself. If it is hidden in another list, i doubt i will ever read it. If it is in between other threads (or above those, with a sticky or somthing) i will read them,

A separate subject at the top-level Discussion level would make it more likely that more people would read it, which might increase the chance of recovery.

Maybe then Theo would have realised whose the Oakwood was *before* he bought it ;-)

(not that I'm complaining in any way, I'm just glad he spotted it and jumped on it before it disappeared)

Cheers
