Local Hero
« on: July 28, 2019, 04:08:20 PM »

Learned from the playing of Tony Hall (one of the greatest tracks he's recorded IMO)- it's from the soundtrack to the movie Local Hero. The soundtrack was written by Mark Knopfler, but I'm not sure if he composed this himself or if it's a traditional piece (?)

It is indeed a Mark Knopfler composition and quite an anthem for his fans.  Here's a link to the piece in concert.  Note the original chord changes...a bit more wistful.

Also check out a companion tune from the film:  Mist Covered Mountains of home.  A brilliant little minor key pipe-ish melody.

I've enjoyed playing both since I first bought the DVD of the movie.

Lovely tune with a beautiful simplicity. I don't think Mark wrote it, though, unless I misunderstand.

I noticed this in the comments on the Ryan's Fancy  version. Credited to one "Eoghanbeg".  He seems to know something about it.

"Nice to hear an Irish group singing this song by John Cameron (1822-1898). In Scottish-Gaidhlig it is usually called Chi Mi na Morbheanna. The tune to John's song was played on the pipes at President Kennedy's funeral.

The story goes that John had disembarked from the Glasgow steamer and composed his song while walking towards his Glencoe home. The view can be seen at the start of Dunach1 on YouTube. John knew William Laurie before he became a famous bagpipe player and composer."
