'Stepping Stones' by Adrian Hopley
« on: August 25, 2019, 07:10:08 PM »

I was noodling away (as you do) and this E minor hornpipe popped into my head, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is called.
I think it used to be played in a now defunct session out in the Peak District, but I may be wrong. It has shades of 'King of the Fairies' and 'The Rights of Man' about it, but it's neither of those. But it's a great tune. Any ideas please? I expect I will have a 'duh! of course!' moment when someone comes up with a name!

Here are the ABC and PDF dots attached.
See corrected version in later post.

I've been told by a friend (off-forum) that this tune is 'Stepping Stones', written by Adrian Hopley. I shall search for a definitive version (i.e. not my memory version) and then repost my ABC and PDF. It's a great tune!

OK I've now found a scruffy photocopied A4 sheet of hand-written dots from one of my cairns of music waiting to be organised into ring binders. Someone must have given it to me at a session somewhere.

I still don't know whether this is Adrian Hopley's hand-written version, but here is the updated ABC and PDF.

Ther chords as given are a bit over-zealous; I suspect they were for a piano accordion or maybe a guitar accompaniment. For D/G melodeon, the B7 chords could be altered to Bm7 and the Am to Am7.

At the bottom of the A4 sheet, someone has written 'belt it out'.  ::)

being nosey, I looked him up - he appears to have a book in print

Adrian Hopley: 54 New Ceilidh Tunes ('Mainly G')

Although there is no tune list.
My immediate thought on listening to the tune was have I seen it used for Molly? Probably not.

I think Stepping Stones would make a great Molly Dance tune.

This tune is in the repertoire of the Well Dressed Band community ceilidh band and we love it! We usually play it as a "listening tune" rather than for dancing.

Our version has exactly the same chords as the ones posted on this thread, and I have to say that they do sound quite cool, especially the repetition of the descending bass line figure.

Of course we have plenty of guitars and piano accordions and things, who can take care of the B major chords, so that's not an issue for us (as long as we don't play a Bm chord which would clash horribly of course!)

Thanks John! I did wonder whether the sheet music which I somehow acquired was from the Well Dressed Band collection. Do you know whether the chords are Adrian Hopley's originals, or whether the WDB have added them?

I'm afraid I don't really know the answer to that question. At a guess, I'd say they're probably Adrian's chords, because the PDF is not formatted like all the other WDB tune PDFs - looks like we've got hold of it from an external source rather than produced it ourselves.

I'll ask Mike Carney - he's been in the band longer than me...

I’m afraid I can’t advise on this. We have certainly had the tune for a good number of  years. Will check with Dave Ball when I see him. Watch this space.
