Melodeon’s are part of the accordion family.  The name a accordion was used for push pull instruments long long before anyone had the daft idea of attaching a piano keyboard.

I usually call them accordions.
In Ireland a one-row box is a melodeon, everything else is an accordion.
In America (Cajun/Quebecois) a one row box is an accordion.
In France accordeon.
For some reason, in England they are melodeons.

Rees,

I believe the OP is looking for technical differences in the two boxes.

Hence my response, "completely different".

If you want a  folk instrument get a Corona, though some professionals manage to elevate them to another level.
The EXTREME is closer to a musical instrument that could be considered a higher quality; better design, materials and workmanship.

I gather the OP wants to know the differences between the fly specs and the pepper.

I am confused. Are they both diatonic accordions?

Yes, they are both diatonic accordions and they are both melodeons and they are both accordions.
Does that help?

The system they use and the notes they can play are the same.  The build quality - and therefore versatility as an instrument is very different.  The Extreme is a better quality instrument.

The Hohner Corona Supreme was produced to celebrate Hohner's 150 year anniversary in 2007. Only 150 of these were manufactured. It is based on the Corona II Classic, but with upgraded materials, pearloid buttons, smoother keyboard action and an improved look. It has 31 treble buttons.

The Hohner Corona Xtreme series was designed by Gilbert Reyes, aimed at the Norteño, Vallenato and Conjunto/Tejano musicians requiring a 34 treble button instrument. They are also completely upgraded from the original Corona with upgraded materials, pearloid buttons, smoother keyboard action and an improved look. There were originally four models:
Corona II Xtreme (no registers - MM)
Corona IIT Xtreme (three registers - switchable MM), Texmex model
Corona IIIN Xtreme (five registers - switchable LMM), Norteño model
Corona IIIV Xtreme (five registers - switchable MMM), Vallenato model

Today Hohner Germany only produce the Corona II Xtreme no registers model from the original four. Hohner's diatonic accordions with registers are now manufactured in Italy by Anacleto Gabbanelli as part of the Rey del Norte Series.

I`ve always seen it as -

if its a Bi-Sonoric (Different note on the pull to the push) button box that`s also Diatonic , it`s a Melodeon, from a tiny Castagnari Mignon to a 5 row steirische Harmonika

If it`s Chromatic and Unisonoric  (same note on suck`n`blaw) regardless of whether it has buttons or keys , it`s an accordion

never knew where to place Bisonoric Chromatics like Double-Rays, Shand morinos, Irish Paolos etc , tend to think of them as Chromatic melodeons

I`m probably wrong though . if all melodeons were 1 rows, this would be a very bleak forum .......

Here in Canada they’re all just called accordions, whether they’re button accordions or piano accordions.  Melodeons is not a term used here (aside from the odd Irish musician who might refer to a one-row as such).

I’ve never seen a Supreme or an Extreme in these parts!
