Poll: Tune of the Month for November 2019
« on: October 26, 2019, 07:23:46 AM »

Hi Folks

This month's selection:

Plant un Cao - traditional Auvergne schottische, in case you're interested, that's the Auvergne spelling. Plante un Chou is the French spelling of the same tune. Nice version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AQB5Md_lxI

Hunt the Squirrel - really? We haven't done this yet? 32 bar straight down the line jig - here played by Saul Bailey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idZawIDMafs

Derriere les Carreaux - great Fred Paris schottische, here played by Paul Young: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYm8iDdHez0

Evening Star / Martha's Comet - a tune (Evening Star) written by Sue Harris for a dance (Martha's Comet) - a great one row tune with lots of 2 row possibilities too. I've always known it as Martha's Comet - much cooler name. Here played by ... er... me, about 6 years ago. https://youtu.be/yVx75MISOcg?t=69

Enjoy!

Clive

Derriere Les Carreaux - a cracking tune that, according to my partner at least translates as 'The Crow's Bum'  ;D

If only it were Melnet's tune of the Decade I might have been able to get a good attempt at that.

Oh dear. Great selection. How to choose ? - I like (and know) all of them and all are tunes  in the 'unmaintained' section of my repertoire. Maybe I should abstain and relearn all of them with the benefit of a fresh perspective (and for Evening Star no longer with the dance Martha's Comet as performed by the wonderful 'Martha Rhoden's Tuppenny Dish' Border Morris side, in my mind).
Need an emoji for nostalgia... ::)

Confess I voted for Hunt the Squirrel. This was the tune we never managed to get round to on the very recent Derby weekend.  Whilst the melody dots are available I thought I would like to see the options for bass/chord arrangements. Hoping that one at least might be within my grasp!

Check this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s4QCZVBhQo for Andy Cutting's arrangement. He plays the LH separately, which will ease learning.

I can't be sure it's the same version (in the middle of DIY so no time to watch the video) but here is a version I got from Andy at Witney a few years back.

I think this version misses the whole individuality of this tune in the B-part the syncopation in bars 5 and 6 which should be notated as

|"G"dB2 dB2|dB2 d3|

This matches Any's playing in the video above

This is similar to the version which John Kirkpatrick plays on the album 'Facing the Music' (a very old one). The only slight difference in JK's version is in the B-music. See the purple notes:

|:"C"c2d edc|c2d edc|c2d e2f|"C"g3-g "D"fe|"G"d2B G2B|d3 B2A|"Em"GAB "D"A2G|"G"G3-G3:|

Personally I much prefer either of Helena's/Andy's or JK's versions rather than the usual B-music with the 'Scottish snap' which (to me) always sounds so out of context in an English tune, yet is almost invariably played in sessions.

Edit: I've found a Youtube version of JK and Sue Harris playing this version:
Hear here at 2:22 minutes in.

As a box player, I get very inspired by vielle and pipes playing of these French tunes.
