General non-melodeon-related chat?
« on: October 18, 2011, 08:17:51 PM »

This might take up too much server space, but I always like to hear what people have to say about their lives: hobbies, likes, dislikes etc. We get to know people better that way!

Alex, firstly welcome to a second thread! You've made it to 'good talker' status on a single thread (!) but I know you play the box and would encourage you to join (or start) ;) others.

Fundamentally this is a small, specialised forum that maintains interest through tight focus. It thus generally avoids some of the cyberbabble of "rivals" like Twitter.  Our twice worthy mods, Theo and Clive can be formidable in defence of this principle when roused. Why, I've had my own wrists slapped for posting about an ice trumpet on 'other instruments' - seemed that they had to be squeezable  :-\

I was my usual maverick self here early on, but have come to see the wisdom of this policy. Too many other forums have fallen to a blethering of off topic tittle-tattle that it's not worth the risk.

So pick up your box and talk! For all other things - hobbies, likes, dislikes, loves, hates, old school friends, pictures of ones cat - there's facebook.com. I even meet members of this very group, and at least three european melodeonistas there ..

You could find many several of us on Facebook Alex. I would probably take some finding unless I'm already a friend of a friend as my privacy settings are pretty high - but I'd be happy to PM a direct link to my wall.  :|glug

It is always nice to flesh people out.  Makes em human, rather than just some words on a screen.  Do take the server space comment onboard though.  Various free forums exist - perhaps we could start an online folk club bar just for chit-chat and leave this hallowed ground for more musical conversations. ;D

Again, Facebook fits to a certain extent. A Open Group called Melnet gives a place to chat, not proper threads of course but there again you don't have threads in everyday conversation.

Good old Facebook.  I'll have to go and have a look.

/edit No such animal.  Unless it's one of the old-style groups and therefore Facebook are making it difficult to find.

It is always nice to flesh people out.  Makes em human, rather than just some words on a screen.

Same limitation applies to FB of course, or any other online encounter.

I believe that one of the reasons melnet works so well is that many of us do meet in the real world from time to time, at festivals, and other music and dance events.  Melodeons at Witney is a good opportunity that is only a few weeks away and it does cater for all levels of experience.  The EATMT events  in and around Stowmarket would also be good for you to meet some of us and to learn more about your box.

Alan Morley, a member here has recently set up UK FOLK Music website which has a discussion forum with a wider remit.

There is now a group called Melnet, I had to add one person I know in order to create it, Lester got the short straw, mainly because he uses his own name on here.

No secretive members now, introduce yourself on the way in ...

Heh, I merely wish for such a thing, and it happens.  I must be a witch.

Have applied, await entry.

Thanks for your responses guys. And thanks Pete!   :M

I think you're all correct that chatter should be kept to Facebook and the like. Mind you, I hate that site! I've never got used to it as it seems so rambling and I worry about security, whatever safeguards they have. I still keep getting Facebook email friend requests etc from people I don't know and I thought I set the privacy settings high!

It would be lovely to meet you all at events, but I'm still not playing at the mo: work, health etc etc, so wouldn't feel I was playing up to scratch and would be a bit embarrassed to tell you the truth.  :-[ but I do intend to start playing again. Honest!

Yes, me too, and I don't even have a Facebook account and never have had one. Don't ever want one either.

Several people here have kindly asked me to 'be friends' and you feel bad saying "no thanks, see you on melnet".

But a yes gets me all their wall chatter, and their friends ... the signal to noise ratio goes down and down.  However it's great for finding out what wickedness one's daughters are getting up to :-\

But what has this to do with melodeons?

Fb is like hotel california. You can check in but you can never leave. Litterally I tried but there's no way to delete your account you just make it dormant.

Facebook can be handy for the easy distribution of party invitations, holiday snaps etc, but I have a rule of only adding people I actually KNOW. That basically works out as met in real life or had a significant number of meaningful conversations online with. I am not one of these people who measures my self-worth by the size of my friend list.

Same as the Catholic church. A recent change to canon law has made it impossible to leave, perhaps because too many people were leaving.
